Follow up after Surgery for Mucormycosis

POST COVID-19/ POST DIABETIC OSTEOMYELITIS OF JAWS

6 WEEKS FOLLOW-UP RESULTS

Dear Doctor,

Thank you for referring cases of osteomyelitis of the jaws caused by uncontrolled diabetes and/or post COVID-19 infection.

This is a 6 weeks’ follow-up of the cases which I shared earlier and recently operated.

Sharing some highlights:

• All the cases were recovered without any mortality till date.
• More than 90% of cases were positive for mucour mycosis in fungal culture and biopsy taken during surgery.
• All the cases recovered after the very first surgery without any complications like oro-antral fistula (OAF) or oro-nasal fistula
  (ONF) except two cases.
• Only those two cases are having OAF due to delayed treatment, huge pre-existing palatal mucosal loss and inadequate
  medical management post-operatively.
• None of the patients were given Ryle’s tube for feeding because they started taking oral fluids/diet from the very next day
• Two cases are having extensive osteomyelitis reaching up to skull base due to delayed treatment and inadequate anti-fungal
  therapy post-operatively.
• About half of the patients have completed the anti-fungal therapy without any morbidities and the rest of the patients are
  under treatment.
